How to get the most out of therapy
PAGE UNDER CONSTRUCTION
There’s a lot that can be said here and which I’m working on writing. Until I finish writing it, here are a few things to consider:
Therapy takes time. If the issues have been around for a long time, chances are therapy is going to take longer. Sticking with it will help you get the most from it. Talk to your psychologist if it feels like therapy is no longer going in the direction you think it should
Your honesty is the most valuable thing you bring to a session. Please find the courage to be honest if a strategy we talked about doesn’t work, or you don’t know how to carry it out, or it just makes you feel too uncomfortable to keep practising it
You need time and willingness to do tasks related to therapy outside of the therapy hour. People generally don’t feel much better unless they practise the skills and strategies we discuss in the therapy hour outside the therapy hour
Therapy can be uncomfortable, both in session and afterwards. But this is usually a sign that we are focusing on the issues that are keeping you stuck. Strategies will be provided to help you tolerate the discomfort a session or strategy might cause you.
